What You Have To Know about the English Proficiency Examination?

When can I take it?

The exam is held three times a year, in January, June, and September. No make-up dates (Mo’ed Bet) are offered for any of the exams.

The next exam will take place on January 24, 2019.

How can I register for the exam?

You can register on this site. After you fill in the on-line registration form, the computer will assign you a room number. All the rooms are in the Ullmann Building.

What do I do on the day of the exam?

You should come directly to the room assigned to you. A list on the door will include your name. In addition, you must present an ID card with a picture in order to be admitted to the exam.

What is the format of the exam?

The English Proficiency Examination tests reading comprehension of advanced technical and scientific texts and knowledge of English language usage. The test contains four sections: A and C are reading comprehension exercises, B and D test grammar and vocabulary. The entire exam is composed of multiple-choice questions and is graded by means of an optical scanner. The last section of the exam is a 5-point open-ended cloze passage which is graded only if a student’s grade is between 60 and 65. Every student receives an examination booklet and an answer sheet for the optical scanner. Answers must be marked in the booklet and transferred to the answer sheet. Both must be returned at the end of the exam.

How long is the exam?

The time allotted for the exam is three hours.

What do I do if I am entitled to time extension or additional accommodations?

If you have a letter from the office of the Graduate School which entitles you to time extension during exams, be sure to present that letter to the coordinator of the Graduate English program, Dr. Maria Yelenevskaya (Tel.: 8293567, e-mail: ymaria@technion.ac.il). You have to speak with the coordinator and make the necessary arrangements ahead of time. Requests for time extension cannot be accommodated on the day of the exam. Students who need audio support take the exam in the CALL lab of the Department of Humanities and Arts using a text-to-speech program.

Can I use a dictionary?

ONLY English-English book-type dictionaries  are permitted and may be used throughout the entire examination. Neither bilingual nor English-English-Hebrew/English-English-Arabic dictionaries may be used. Note that  each student should have his/her own dictionary. Dictionaries may not be shared during the exam, and no extra dictionaries are available in the rooms during the exam.

What is the passing grade for the exam?

The passing grade is 65.

How can I prepare for the English Proficiency Examination?

A course, Advanced English for Graduate Studies, is offered to students who need additional review and systematic practice. This course  is compulsory for those who have failed the test. If you are preparing for the exam on your own, you can visit the CALL lab in the Department of Humanities and Arts in  free access hours (See the schedule on the web site https://humanities.technion.ac.il/).
