This Winter semester  we will continue to explore short literary texts highlighting philosophical issues by authors such as Kafka, Borges, Calvino, L. Carrol, T. Mann, alongside philosophical texts which also have literary value by Plato, Lucretius and others. Participants will also present texts of their own choosing.

Registration for Academic Credit:

Students who wish to take this reading group for academic credit (2 points), should email the instructors describing their interest in taking the course with reference to their background.

Assessment will be based on responses to weekly reading assignments, an oral presentation, and a written essay on the reading material.

Here are samples readings and authors:

• Selections from Plato’s Symposium and Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura.
• Selections from Franz Kafka, Jorge Luis Borges, Italo Calvino, Lewis Carroll.
• Selections from Insurmountable Simplicities by Varzi and Casati.
• Texts on Space and Time:

1. 1. 1. Escher on the Infinite and the nature of Space
      2. Selections from Borges, The Book of Sand
      3. Selections from Thomas Mann, The Magic Mountain

• Dostoevsky: The Grand Inquisitor (from “The Brothers Karamazov”).
• Selections from Nietzsche’s Gay Science and Beyond Good and Evil.
• Stories and Texts chosen and presented by participants.
