Academic writing for doctoral students

  • The registration for the ‘Academic writing for doctoral students’ course in English  3280016  is done through the student portal. The course is worth 2 points, with a pass/fail grade.
  • This course equips PhD students with essential academic writing skills, emphasizing academic writing style, clarity, organization, and audience engagement. It is based on Academic writing guidelines, including the CEFR and ECFR standards. This includes advanced academic writing competencies to produce clear, well-structured, and complex academic texts, using appropriate jargon. It covers abstract writing, IMRAD (introduction, methods, results, discussion) structure of academic articles, effective use of AI tools, ethical considerations, and dissemination strategies, including presentations and science communication. Moreover, the course teaches students to use both rhetorical strategies used in scientific writing and employ reverse engineering practices to understand the layout and goals of various academic genres. The course is open to doctoral students only.
  • Notice regarding registration dates for the class will be sent via email. No late registrations are accepted.
  • Completion of the course requirement is conditional upon participation in the lectures, personal meetings, and the submission of all work with a passing grade.
  • The Academic writing for doctoral students’ course is a required course that must be completed within three semesters from the beginning of the course of study. Students in the direct track for a PhD are required to complete the course within three semesters of having their status changed to a PhD. Non-completion of the requirement on time – A student who does not complete the requirement by the third year of his studies may complete it in the fourth semester. If the student does not complete the requirement in the fourth semester, they will be classified as being in an “improper” academic state and will be given one additional opportunity to complete the requirement. If the student fails to complete the requirement in the fifth semester, their studies will be terminated.

For master’s students

  • Students may register for the elective ‘Academic writing for masters students’ course in English (3280017). The course is worth 2 points, with a pass/fail grade. The course is tailored to the needs and level of master’s students; therefore, completing the course does not exempt students from the doctoral academic writing course.
  • The elective ‘Academic writing for masters students’ course gives students lessons and practice in producing clear, well-structured texts in their research subject area. It focuses on analyzing structure through small-scale drafting and revision and collaborative group work. It is based on more fundamental aspects of academic writing and communication, aligned with CEFR (European/International) standards. The course provides students with a strong foundation and constructive feedback in writing for research and thesis development. It also introduces students to submission guidelines for journals/conferences. The course is open to master’s students only.
