PhD Position: Philosophy of Biology

We invite applications for a PhD position in a new research group dedicated to the philosophy of biology in the Humanities & Arts Department at the Technion, led by Dr. Topaz Halperin. The group addresses philosophical problems that arise in contemporary biology, with a strong emphasis on connecting philosophy to current scientific practice. Research projects centered on biostatistics will receive priority, but applications on other topics in the philosophy of biology are encouraged.

Projects may examine the meaning of statistical significance in the face of biological variability, the philosophical stakes of species de-extinction efforts, or how AI-driven research reshapes explanation in the life sciences.

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research environment that encourages collaboration between philosophers and scientists. A dual appointment with a biological research group is possible, pending agreement of both parties.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct original philosophical research leading to a PhD dissertation.
  • Participate in reading groups, seminars, and workshops.
  • Contribute to the intellectual life of the research group and the department.

Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree in philosophy of science or a closely related field, or a degree in a biological discipline with motivation to transition to philosophy of science.
  2. Strong interest in the conceptual and methodological foundations of biology; familiarity with biostatistics is an advantage.
  3. Ability to engage with biological literature and contemporary scientific debates.
  4. Evidence of strong academic writing and analytical skills.

Application Instructions:

The application should include:

  • CV, including a list of publications
  • A research proposal (up to 1300 words, plus bibliography)
  • Two reference letters
