Postdoc Position: Philosophy of Biology

Start date: Flexible, but no later than June 1, 2026
Deadline: October 31, 2025
Duration: 1 year
We invite applications for a full-time postdoctoral position in the philosophy of biology, hosted by Dr. Topaz Halperin in the Department of Humanities and Arts at the Technion. The position is open to researchers interested in philosophical questions arising from contemporary biology, for example in evolutionary theory, genomics, and systems biology.
The position welcomes a broad range of topics in the philosophy of biology. Priority will be given, however, to research that examines the statistical dimensions of biological inquiry. This emerging line of research explores how statistical reasoning shapes biological practice by analyzing the implicit assumptions underlying statistical methods and their role in interpreting data. Possible focus areas include null modeling in evolutionary biology, statistical inference in genomics, and the interpretation of high-throughput data in systems biology.
The successful candidate will conduct independent research while contributing to collaborative projects. Responsibilities include participating in regular discussion meetings, helping to organize academic workshops or conferences, and contributing to the intellectual life of the group.
Qualifications:
- A PhD in philosophy of science or a closely related area, or a PhD in a biological discipline with an interest in transitioning to philosophy of science (candidates nearing PhD completion will be considered).
- Ability to engage with biological literature and contemporary scientific debates.
- A demonstrated record of excellent research and publication.
- Interest in fostering collaborations with scientists and working across disciplinary boundaries.
Stipend: $30,000 per year.
Application Instructions:
The application should include:
- CV, including a list of publications
- A research proposal (up to 1300 words, plus bibliography)
- Two reference letters
Please send applications by 31 October 2025 to Anat Glass (anatg@technion.ac.il) with CC to Dr. Topaz Halperin (topazh@technion.ac.il). Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview. For inquiries, please contact Dr. Topaz Halperin at the same address.
